Hypnotic Inductions - making the connection

Hypnotic Inductions - making the connection.

"When you become quiet, it just dawns on you"

Effectual Inductions - the Parasympathetic systems natural escalator.
Inductions have already been covered to some degree in the previous chapter. We have discovered what they are (the narrowing of consciousness) but we have yet to explain what possible content lies within a hypnotic induction.
A skilful hypnotist will have a number of inductions at his disposal and is able to create new effective scripts at will. Everyone is unique to some extent, therefore reacts slightly differently in different situations, for this reason alone the hypnotist needs to remain flexible in his approach.
Hypnotists should always tell their subjects about the internal and external experiences that are going to happen, this is the art of hypnosis. Two effects are seen from this, one; it helps to convince the hypnotic that something is occurring and two; it builds confidence in the abilities of the hypnotist. The physiological response from taking three deep breaths is a higher level of oxygen in the blood, due to increased breathing. This in turn constricts blood vessels to the brain causing a feeling of slight dizziness. The subject will respond by believing something is happening due to hypnosis.
Such demonstration acts as a way to alter even the most sceptical person's perceptions of reality. This combination of fact, physiological responses and compounding of suggestions serves as a potent cocktail in the hypnotist's armoury. There are many, many examples of these mixtures of physiological and psychological combinations and they are only restricted by the practitioner's imagination.
Another element frequently found in hypnotic inductions is the addition of water scenarios. It is assumed that all human beings have relaxation responses associated with water and the act of floating. This is predominantly due to humans associating water with the once immersion in amniotic fluids in their mothers womb. The many inductions incorporating, 'going deeper down a staircase', 'travelling through a warm tunnel gradually getting colder and seeing trees at the end of the tunnel' are all unconscious analogies in order to reinstate the pleasant environment of the unborn child graduating to birth.
One of the best ways I feel to choose an induction is through empathy. Notice a type of induction that just somehow feels good, one you are simply attracted to.
I have set out some guidelines for inducing hypnosis in this chapter, but there is no reason why you should not change them or even make up your own. Have a look at the scripts and try to decipher the underlying reasons for the themes and elements in them, this will enable you to gain a greater understanding of how to build your own. When it comes down to it, it really does not matter about including long elaborate tales in inductions, the key point is to create a level of relaxation. The simplest way to do this is to close your eyes and to gradually relax your body one part at a time, including some soft non-repetitive music in this equation will enhance the benefits. Inductions are essentially quick ways of accessing this state and are very good methods of deepening the level of hypnosis. So just give a few a go and find the ones which work best for you, and enjoy the process, it is fun. For best results it is often preferable to tape your inductions and scripts on to tape or c.d. as this allows further relaxation. Many people find that it's hard to relax whilst listening to their own voice, so get a friend to record it for you.
